Insurance and Risk

In 1983 it became legal to transfer a registration from a stolen vehicle. This is as long as the vehicle is reported stolen to the police and not recovered for a minimum of one year from that date. Selected insurance companies offer cover for the period of loss.

You will not lose your entitlement to your registration if your vehicle is in an accident and written off. Just make sure that you make an application to your nearest Local Office immediately to transfer the registration to another vehicle or retention certificate. Waiting for the insurance company to pay you could result in them becoming the new owner instead of you.

You will need a letter from your insurance company stating the number plate, chassis number and confirmation that the vehicle is written off and that the insurance company have no rights to your number. Failure to do this could result in the right to apply for a transfer passing to them. If this happens, you will lose all your rights to the number.

We advise that you should never formally surrender your ownership of the vehicle until the transfer has been processed at the DVLA and that you have the new vehicle registration document or retention certificate in your possession.

On occasions the Local Office will ask to inspect the donor vehicle to ensure that it exists and to examine its chassis number to ensure that it corresponds with the information records.
