After more than 20 years of trading, we have found that the values of numberplates increases year on year. Many people are using personalised number plates as a serious financial investment. Plates can be sold for anything from a couple of hundred pounds to well over the value of the car itself.
With the combinations changing every six months now, there is plenty of opportunity to invest in the new numbers as well as the old. Some of our clients are thinking up words and names for the new style number plates, buying up several, then selling them on at a profit. Many clients take a long-term view and compile hugely valuable collections over many years.
As numberplates can be held on retention certificates, many people are buying up personalised registrations and selling them on at a profit. For example, 1 NU, when bought in 1995 was worth £2,400. It now holds a market value of £25,000. This is not an irregular return on an investment in numberplates - the value will grow year on year.
"Number One" plates tend to appreciate in value the most, for example 1 OA and 1 TCB - bought for £3,000 each in 1992, now worth between £15,000 and £20,000 each.
