Search for 'genuine' Orkney number proves fruitful
Now living in England, Chris Burrows from Orkney, has found a
true Orkney number plate after an extensive search. Chris said:
"As a Scot married to an Englishman and living in England,
I still feel that "home" for me is in Orkney, where
I spent my childhood. Orkney is the group of islands lying off
the north coast of Scotland beyond John O'Groats. In the late
60's I bought my first car in Orkney. It was a dark blue Vauxhall
Viva, registration number B2 7629. The BS registration has always
been assigned to Orkney, and because the population is relatively
small and very stable, most of the cars there still carry the
local registration, or did until the new format was introduced
in 2001. It therefore has very strong associations with home for
me.
"While waiting for the delivery of my Mercedes SLK, my husband
suggested that we should put a personal plate on it. Not wanting
to have my name or initials on my car my first thought was that
it would be fun to find BS 7629.
"An enquiry to DVLA established that it no longer exists.
It may well have ended up as a rusting heap on some forgotten
corner of Orkney, or been pushed over a cliff when the car got
too old, a common way of disposing of old cars on a remote island.
So we started to look for a similar BS registration. The DVLA
were very helpful and suggested that they could construct "7629
BS" for me, but I wanted a "genuine" one, and Orkney
never had the reversed format with numbers before letters - there
were not enough cars! So we spent a whole winter reading lists
in newspapers and on web sites while I waited for delivery of
the SLK. Eventually we found BS 7625 and I decided that was near
enough to do. It has been on my SLK ever since and I have become
very attached to it. I have no doubt that I will keep this number
now and that even if I end up driving something completely different
from the SLK, it will still be registered BS 7625."
