On your bike! - D8 FFY ducks out of new style numbers
While the rush is on to find the best of the new style number
plates, Mr Daffyd Lowery ('Daffy') from Hillingdon, Middlesex,
is buying up old style number plates as an investment. "The
time to buy the old plates is now. With the introduction of the
new combinations, the old style plates are sure to go up in value,
especially a great plate like D8 FFY," he said.
Mr Lowery owns a Classing Motorcycle shop on the Uxbridge Road,
but he says he started out on his parents egg farm in Lincolnshire
many years ago. "They got me on to the whole plate thing,
I remember they had the number plates EGG 4T and EGG 25 which
they sold on to 'Thames Valley Eggs.'" Two of the other plates
Mr Lowery owns are C10 FFY and M11 AGU which he is selling. "M11
AGU is on an MV Augusta F4 S Motorbike - a great choice for the
enthusiast." When we bought the MV Augusta, it came with
the number plate A6 UMV which is good as well."
"Mr Lowery told me that he is known as Daffy and that he'd
had his eye on the D8 FFY plate for some time", says Tim
Wheatley, the sales person who dealt with Mr Lowery's call. "He
told me that he drives a hard bargain, but that he couldn't resist
this plate any longer! Mr Lowery is among a growing number of
shrewd business people who are buying number plates and selling
them on. We've even had Building Society and Bank managers purchasing
plates as an investment."
Although Mr Lowery's preference is the old style plates, people
are buying the new style number plates as an investment - they
think of good words or names, buy them up early and then sell
them on. For example, Mr Nazir from Birmingham purchased DE51
GNA (designer) and BE51 DEU (beside you) amongst others, before
September 1st 2001 when the new style plates first came out. He
said, "I looked in the dictionary for words you could make
with the 51 age identifier. I also thought of DE51 REU (desire
you) and DE51 DEU (decide you)."
